Tree Reductions

Tree pruning and tree reduction in Bristol. Deciduous tree with no leaves against a blue sky with a few clouds, surrounded by green brush.

As we continue to plant trees in our gardens, businesses and communal spaces, routine maintenance must be carried out to ensure trees do not get too big for their surroundings.

There are numerous reasons why the owner of a tree may want to control the growth of their trees. Ultimately, reducing a tree is always preferred to removing a tree completely.

Using various methods we can reduce a tree to better suit your needs. These methods include: Crown Reductions, Crown Lifting, Crown Thinning, Weight Reducing Branches, Pollarding, Coppicing and Veteranising.

We use target pruning methods and take great care when reducing your tree to ensure that, going forward, your trees grow naturally with good branch structure.

Tree Removals

Tree removal in Bristol. A person in a lift cutting down a tall tree in a residential yard, with logs piled on the ground nearby.

When a tree comes to the end of its life, it may be considered too dangerous to be kept alive. Different species of tree have varying life-spans, or they can often fall prey to different diseases and wood decaying fungi, which can quickly change its ability to operate within its environment.

Typically, we use ropes, rigging lines and a harness to climb and dismantle the tree manually. However, sometimes machinery may be used to help us instead. We often use cranes, boom lifts and cherry pickers, mechanical winches, wood chippers, excavators and stump grinders to get the job done. Whatever the tree, we have got it covered.

With our training and collective experience in the industry, we are specialists in removing dead and dangerous trees. We use the best equipment and safest practices to get your tree dismantled in the most efficient way possible.

Fruit Tree Maintenance

Tree pruning and fruit tree pruning in Bristol. Fruit tree pruning and maintenance. A lush backyard garden with a large leafy tree, a wooden bench, a birdbath, and various plants along a stone pathway under a blue sky.

We specialise in pruning all varieties of fruit trees, and are happy to offer advice on what is best for your tree. This includes assessing whether pruning is necessary, what work is required, and the most suitable time of year to carry it out.

Pruning is carried out to improve the shape of the tree, allow better light penetration, increase fruit quality, and maintain the tree’s overall health. Typically, main structural pruning should be carried out in winter, which encourages better growing habits. In summer, light pruning may be needed to control size and remove excess growth. For younger trees, the emphasis is on training and developing a strong structure rather than heavy pruning. For mature trees, pruning is focused on maintaining shape and supporting continued productivity.

Fruit tree pruning should always be undertaken by experienced and reputable tree surgeons. Incorrect pruning can cause long-term damage to the tree and affect its health and productivity.

Emergency Tree Work

Tree pruning and tree reductions for emergency tree work in Bristol. A worker in safety gear pruning a large, leafless tree next to a residential house on a cloudy day.

Our emergency call-out service covers Bristol and the surrounding counties. Our goal is to attend all urgent call-outs within 24 hours, prioritising situations where trees present an immediate danger to people or property.

We have the expertise and specialist equipment to deal with emergency situations, including, storm damage, fallen or uprooted trees, split trunks and hazard beams, hanging or broken limbs, and trees effecting utilities . Our first priority is always safety. This is followed by a prompt assessment of the tree’s stability, structural integrity, and level of risk before any work begins. Where necessary, hazardous sections are safely removed or stabilised, and branches can be controlled with aerial rigging techniques, sectional dismantling, bracing or cabling, or full tree removal.

Tree Bracing

Tree bracing. Tree safety. A tree with a black braided rope wrapped around its trunk, secured with black fabric in a wooded area.

Tree bracing provides supplemental support to weak, cracked, or structurally compromised trees. Trees with co-dominant stems, included branch unions, heavy limbs, or storm damage may be suitable for tree bracing where removal is not the preferred option. This approach is often chosen to help preserve mature or historically significant trees.

Tree bracing uses dynamic cabling or rods between branches or stems to redistribute load or reduce failure risk. Dynamic bracing allows natural movement and encourges strengthening, while for more severe defects, static bracing is used. Bracing systems should be checked periodically and adjusted as the tree grows.

We are qualified in fitting and the necessary ongoing maintenance of rigid and dynamic tree bracing that adheres to arboricultural standards.

Hedge Cutting

Hedge cutting and hedge shaping in Bristol. Trimmed hedges and bushes in a garden with a grassy lawn, gravel pathway, and trees under a partly cloudy sky.

Hedges are an important part of our modern natural environment, they provide vital food and shelter for our native birds and insects. When they are maintained correctly, they can also be a beautiful addition to anyone’s property.

All hedges should be cut at least once a year, with some species benefiting from more frequent cuts. It is best to trim hedges in the ‘dormant season’ when they aren’t actively growing and there is less potential for nesting birds.

We pride ourselves in our attention to detail when it comes to hedge-cutting, all waste is removed sustainably and we take extra care in leaving your garden spotless.

Stump Grinding

When a tree is felled, removing the stump is often seen as an additional part of the process. This is mainly because it requires a completely different machine to deal with it. We offer the whole package at George Thacker Tree Care. Our stump grinders chip away and disintegrate stumps in a matter of minutes and can be a great option if you are looking to landscape your garden.

Whatever the size of your tree stumps, we’ve got the machines to deal with them.

Garden Clearance

Garden clearance in Chepstow and Bristol. Garden area under renovation with tools, a wheelbarrow filled with dirt, rake, shovel, and ladder placed on the ground, and a street and houses in the background.

A garden can quickly get out of control if left unchecked! Sometimes its easier to just start again and wipe the slate clean.

Removing the unwanted shrubs and trees, brush-cutting the brambles, weeds and overgrown grass is a good place to start. After stumps and roots have been dealt with, the ground can then be tilled and turned over.

Garden clearance doesn’t always mean removing everything, some trees and shrubs can be hit back hard and allowed to grow again. We can also help to put your garden back together again - trees and shrubs can be planted, grass turf laid and borders re-imagined.
